Mideweek volunteer tree planting on Ericstane (Corehead)

04.02.2026

Just 2 volunteers this week plus the site manager. We began by planting a couple of apple trees in the orchard. These had come from an apple grafting workshop that BFT had run the year prior so it was quite a nice story for them to be returned to their place of origin. We performed a very thorough screefing with a mattock for both trees. A square of at least 60x60cm was made with every effort being made to remove all grass, roots an all. The apple trees were secured with a stake and inner vole guard followed by a secondary barrier of chicken wire.

After the orchard work we planted on Ericstane. After the recent wet weather, the ground was very waterlogged. We were focusing on trees like Alder that would be more than happy with this level of wetness. Although it was noticeable that in some patches, the soil a few inches underneath was relatively dry. Will be interesting to return to this site and see how everything is doing.
