Badger Bank (Midweek volunteering at Corehead)

13.05.2026

Today we finished the last of the unexpected tree planting days. There remained mostly oak and birch which was planted along a steep sided river bank. These plants prefer dry soil but the stream is not known to burst its banks and the banks are very steep so the majority of the plants should be safe in this regard. The soil was very sandy and some of the birches were looking past their best so it will be interesting to see how this crop fares. The sandy soil should help with drainage but will provide less structure thus the trees will require deep roots if they are to stay upright.

The bank is inhabited by a badger set and there were lots of patches of scraped earth. On several occasions I made use of the exposed earth for a head-start on a screef!

Site where I did most of my planting - along the area of steep sided river bank and, in the foreground, the area of flat ground on the other side.
Little oak going in. Deep roots will be required to stay upright in this sandy soil!
